Over the past few years, exercise has become an important life modification for people. Whether it is being done for recreational purposes, as an intervention to an illness, or simply a lifestyle change, its importance cannot be understated. The health and mental benefits of exercising are what have given rise to many people being interested in educating themselves about exercising and how it can benefit them in their lives.

Each person is different and what works for them will also be different. As the world of exercising and good physical health is expanding, more and more people are realizing that they do not have to go to the gym if that is not their preferred form of physical activity. Aerobic exercises like walking, jogging, cycling, hiking, swimming, and dancing have given people much choice in terms of how they might exercise.

The question that is always asked is how much exercise is enough to make a difference in a person’s life. The Harvard School of Public Health, through its research, found that if one runs for fifteen minutes every day or takes an hour to walk, they reduce the risk of major depression by 26%. A fifteen-minute run or an hour walk is not much. Everyone can do it and you can start without feeling overwhelmed.

It is, however, important to note that for greater well-being, exercising does not work in isolation. When combined with a healthy diet and healthy relationships, it gives a greater chance at a balanced life. Apart from helping people to have a general sense of well-being, exercising has many benefits. Some of those benefits are discussed below.

Benefits of exercise

Improved cognitive functioning

Exercising boosts the brain’s ability to function fully. This means that memory is restored, there is greater alertness, and an improved ability to think and reason intelligently. Exercising gets rid of brain fogginess and focuses attention.

Better physical health

When we exercise, we give ourselves the chance to be in great physical health. Although aging and other factors can affect how our body functions, by exercising, we are taking an active role in our health. Exercise guards us from developing illnesses like diabetes, heart problems, cancer, obesity, and high blood pressure.

Intervention for certain health problems

Health practitioners and mental health professionals prescribe exercise as an intervention for certain ailments. Exercise has been seen to have tremendous positive effects on depression, anxiety, PTSD, mood disorders, and schizophrenia, to mention a few. Likewise, it has been recommended for those struggling with diabetes, high blood pressure, and stress-related diseases.

Boosts self-esteem

People who exercise report a boost in their self-esteem and well-being. Exercise produces endorphins which are responsible for elevating our mood and outlook on life. Also, by overcoming all the obstacles that easily stop people from exercising, there is a sense of accomplishment that comes with doing it.

One feels better about themselves and feels a certain sense of control over their life. Exercise helps individuals maintain a healthy weight which itself can be a huge self-esteem booster.

Finding community

Our world is becoming increasingly isolated. Exercise helps individuals find community and fosters long-lasting relationships. Whether it is joining a sports team or a group of hikers, physical activity allows us to meet and mingle with people who can turn into life-long friends.

An outlet for frustration

It is a normal part of life that we will encounter challenging and frustrating situations. Exercise offers a healthy alternative to dealing with that frustration or pent-up stress that comes with trying to survive in this world. Exercise also helps as a distraction from negative thoughts that can easily overwhelm individuals.

Improved sleep

Sleep is important. Exercise has been seen to improve our ability to sleep and recharge. Sleep deprivation can cause debilitating fatigue that has tremendous negative effects on one’s ability to function.

Increase in energy levels

Because exercise improves cardiovascular fitness, energy levels are increased as a result. When one has the energy to tackle their tasks and take care of their responsibilities it improves their well-being by reducing stress.
